Mandatory Kit List
You need all of the items on the list to take part in the Winter Skills Course for Runners.
Storage
- 500ml softflask
- 500ml-1L Hard bottle
- Large dry bags for spare clothing
- Medium dry bag for emergency kit
- Running bag to fit all the kit (probably around 20L)
Clothing
Day 1 is slow moving. We will be walking and standing around in the cold. We will not be running. Therefore you need boots and more clothing that you’d take on a winter run.
- B2 / B3 Winter boots – waterproof & warm. (Possible to rent from outdoor shops.) If unsure message me.
- Thick wool walking socks
- Synthetic underwear
- 1 pair of thin gloves
- 1 pair of water-proof gloves
- Outdoor trousers / leggings layered under waterproofs
- Long sleeve base layer top
- Mid-layer insulation
- Belay Jacket
- Waterproof coat
- Waterproof Trousers
- Warm head cover
Day 2 will be a run. We will be stopping and practicing skills more than we would on a typical winter mountain run. It’s fine to reuse bits of kit from the day before so long as you can dry them out.

Emergancy Kit
Not to be relied upon outside of an emergency situation.
Outside of the course I’d also include a First Aid Kit and Bothy Bag in this list but I’ll provide these on the course.

Nutrition
- Food – If you’re not used to winter then you might need more than you’re used to. Food can freeze solid so choose carefully. Frozen Snickers can break teeth.
- Water – It’s heavy so only take what you need. Out in the cold you won’t feel as thirsty and you can get little dehydrated and not keel over. Just be sure to hydrate when we come off the hill.
If there’s anything you’re unsure of send me a message and I’ll try and help you out.
